CAMO-Net Brazil backs primary care AMR symposium

More than 300 healthcare professionals, researchers and practitioners gathered in person and online for the II Primary Care Symposium: Preventing Infections and Antimicrobial Resistance, held on 22 May 2026.

Organised by the Infection Control Group of the Clinics Hospital of the University of São Paulo with support from CAMO-Net Brazil, the hybrid event focused on strengthening infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship in Primary Health Care.

The symposium brought together leading experts, including Professor Anna Sara Levin, CAMO-Net Brazil Co-Lead, and Dr Lauro Perdigão, an infectious diseases physician and researcher with expertise in infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship, who shared evidence-based approaches to infection management, patient safety and the responsible use of antibiotics.

A key feature of the event was the opportunity for colleagues from São Caetano do Sul, the original CAMO-Net implementation site, and Ceará, where the programme has since expanded, to present their experiences and outcomes. Their presentations demonstrated how locally adapted antimicrobial stewardship interventions can improve prescribing practices, strengthen healthcare delivery and reduce inappropriate antibiotic use.

By bringing together researchers, clinicians and healthcare leaders, the symposium highlighted the importance of sharing experiences and translating evidence into practical solutions that can improve patient care.

Professor Anna Sara Levin said: “The success of antimicrobial stewardship depends on people and partnerships. Events like this allow us to learn from each other and demonstrate how local solutions, adapted to local realities, can make a meaningful difference to prescribing practices and patient care.”
