CAMO-Net India engages communities to promote responsible antibiotic use

Researchers from the CAMO-Net India Hub are working with local communities to raise awareness of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and the importance of using antibiotics responsibly.

Led by Prof Nusrat Shafiq and her team, the activities were carried out in collaboration with the Department of Community Medicine and the School of Public Health at PGIMER, Chandigarh. Community outreach sessions were held at Anganwadi centres, which provide health and nutrition support to women and children across India.

During the sessions, community members learned about the risks of inappropriate antibiotic use, particularly for common febrile illnesses, and the importance of taking antibiotics only when prescribed and completing the full course of treatment. Discussions also highlighted how responsible antibiotic use can help address the growing challenge of AMR.

The activities aimed to improve public understanding of antimicrobial stewardship and support informed healthcare decisions within the community. By engaging directly with local people, the team hopes to encourage practices that protect the effectiveness of antibiotics for future generations.

Prof Nusrat Shafiq said: “Addressing antimicrobial resistance requires more than new medicines. It also requires informed communities. By working directly with people and listening to their experiences, we can support more responsible antibiotic use and help protect these life-saving medicines for the future.”
